RGB Networks Enables Cable Operators to Deliver 50 Percent More VOD
Programming with New Dynamic Bandwidth Manager

Industry’s first real-time video processing platform for VOD transrating offers extremely low
latency and high density

SAN MATEO, CA – June 11, 2007RGB Networks, the leader in network video processing, is helping cable television operators to dramatically expand their successful video-on-demand (VOD) deployments with the company’s new Dynamic Bandwidth Manager (DBM) which allows operators to deliver up to 50 percent more VOD programming using the same amount of bandwidth.

In typical VOD deployments, cable operators deliver 10 standard definition (SD) VOD programs per 6 MHz 256-QAM channel, with each program allocated a fixed amount of bandwidth.  Using RGB’s proven transrating capability to continually adjust the bit rates of the individual programs, the DBM enables 15 or more SD programs to be carried in the same amount of bandwidth.  The DBM achieves this level of bandwidth efficiency while maintaining optimum picture quality. The DBM also allows operators to increase the number of high definition (HD) VOD programs they offer, as it can similarly reduce the bandwidth requirements of HD programming.

“RGB’s Video Intelligence Architecture – the heart of our new Dynamic Bandwidth Manager and other RGB products – was developed specifically to enable the wide-scale delivery of advanced, on-demand applications by cable operators,” said Ramin Farassat, Vice President of Product Marketing for RGB Networks.  “The advanced architecture of the DBM offers an operationally simple solution for VOD bandwidth optimization, which allows operators to deliver substantially more VOD content without requiring additional bandwidth. The bandwidth saved by the DBM can be used for new services such as HD VOD or to deliver more of the operator’s current services.  In addition to its operational advantages, the DBM’s real-time processing and low latency preserve subscribers VOD experience.”

The DBM is exceptionally easy to deploy as it transrates VOD programs in real-time, eliminating the need for complicated pre-processing of the programs and any complex integration with VOD servers.  Operators simply ‘plug’ the DBM into existing VOD deployments as it is compatible with all the major components of an end-to-end VOD system, including VOD servers, resource managers and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulators.  The DBM can also encrypt each VOD program as it is transrated, making it dramatically easier for operators to continually add new programming to their VOD line-ups compared to solutions which require extensive pre-processing of the content.  Another advantage of the DBM’s real-time processing is that it can also be used in switched digital video (SDV) architectures, unlike pre-processing and non-real-time-based solutions which cannot work with live broadcast programs.

Complementing its real-time transrating performance is the DBM’s extremely low latency, which ensures that subscribers will experience no noticeable differences when using VOD’s fast forward, rewind and pause ‘trickplay’ features.

RGB will demonstrate the bandwidth optimizing capabilities of the DBM at its booth (2480) at the upcoming Cable-Tec Expo, June 20-22, in Orlando, Florida.

Several major North American cable operators are expected to begin trials of the DBM in the third quarter of 2007.
