RGB Networks Ensures Interoperability of VOD Bandwidth Optimization Solution with SeaChange
RGB’s Dynamic Bandwidth Manager integrated with SeaChange’s VOD system
SUNNYVALE, CA – Sept. 6, 2007 – RGB Networks (www.rgbnetworks.com), the leader in network video processing, announced today that SeaChange International, a leading provider of complete solutions for video-on-demand (VOD), and RGB have integrated the new RGB Dynamic Bandwidth Manager (DBM) with SeaChange’s VOD System. This integration builds on extensive testing that RGB has already conducted with other vendors, and include set-top boxes, session resource managers and other components in the VOD delivery chain.
“As a recognized market share and technology leader in VOD solutions, SeaChange is naturally a key partner for us as we expand into the VOD market. There is substantial synergy between our respective solutions and the opportunity to integrate our products is key,” said Ramin Farassat, Vice President of Product Marketing for RGB Networks. “With this successful integration of our Dynamic Bandwidth Manager with SeaChange’s VOD system, cable operators can take full advantage of synergistic capabilities of both products to deliver up to 50 percent more VOD programming without the need for expensive network upgrades and additional QAM channels.”
RGB Networks’ DBM, recently launched for the U.S. market, improves bandwidth efficiency by up to 50 percent in VOD applications, enabling cable operators to deliver significantly more programming while preserving optimal picture quality and ensuring that subscribers experience no noticeable differences when using VOD’s fast-forward, rewind and pause ‘trickplay’ features. Utilizing RGB’s proven real-time transrating technology, the DBM converts the standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) VOD programs from constant bit rates (CBR) to variable bit rates (VBR) in which the bandwidth allocated to each program varies constantly, freeing considerable bandwidth to carry additional programs.
“Experience shows that SeaChange can continue to peel back every aspect of the VOD delivery chain and decrease the cost of deployment,” said Tom Rosenstein, Vice President of Product Marketing, SeaChange. "We have our eye on vastly improving bandwidth use. With VOD usage taking off, alongside all the other digital cable services, bandwidth is a big concern for our customers. That's why we’re working with RGB's new Dynamic Bandwidth Manager, producing a tight connection that will give SeaChange customers another option to ensure that VOD demand will be met."
Complementing its bandwidth optimizing capabilities, the DBM is exceptionally easy to deploy as it processes the VOD programs in real-time, eliminating the need for complicated pre-processing of the programs and any complex integration with VOD servers. Operators simply ‘plug’ the DBM into existing VOD deployments as it is compatible with all the major components of an end-to-end VOD system, including VOD servers, resource managers and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulators. The DBM will also encrypt VOD programs as they are processed, making it dramatically easier for operators to continually add new programming to their VOD line-ups compared to solutions which require extensive pre-processing. Another advantage of the DBM’s real-time processing is that it can also be used in switched digital video (SDV) architectures, unlike non-real-time solutions which cannot work with live broadcast programs.
