TransAct Encoder/Transcoder

As the delivery of IP video over managed and unmanaged networks continues to grow, video service providers (VSPs) are demanding the latest in HTTP adaptive streaming technologies - they require products with the versatility to deal with both baseband and compressed streams, along with files that come in different formats. A key component of RGB’s eVIA family of IP video products, the TransAct Encoder/Transcoder offers a highly flexible solution for a variety of applications and leverages a next-generation compression engine capable of pristine video quality at very low bitrates.

RGB’s TransAct Encoder/Transcoder supports a wide variety of operational modes, addressing many applications with a common feature set and operational procedures. Key modes supported and applications include:

  • Stream-to-stream, with input as baseband SDI or compressed streams (e.g. MPEG-2 TS over IDP/IP). Applications include locally generated content arriving by dark fiber or high-bandwidth IP or SONET/SDH infrastructure as SDI, or a relatively small number of compressed inputs.
  • Stream-to-file, with typical applications including time-shifted TV targeting multiscreen devices, and content stored in a mezzanine format for later packaging/encryption, or content stored pre-packaged.
  • File-to-file, often used for video-on-demand (VOD) applications; also used to create a mezzanine format or for offline transcoding and packaging/encryption.

Addressing encoding/transcoding needs for managed IP video, over-the-top (OTT) delivery, IPTV, and web and mobile applications, the TransAct Encoder/Transcoder accommodates on-demand and live video delivery needs with market-leading price, performance, flexibility, scalability and interoperability.

RGB Networks offers the TransAct Encoder/Transcoder as either a software license or as an appliance. The software license-only solution can be downloaded or shipped on a DVD and allows customers to deploy on their choice of server-based hardware platform. Running on an RGB supported appliance - the Application Media Server (AMS) - TransAct Encoder/Transcoderthe TransAct Encoder/Transcoder provides a minimum MTBF of 100,000 hours, as the AMS is an extremely durable hardware appliance requiring minimal ongoing maintenance.

TransAct Encoder/Transcoder Advantages

Versatile: SDI/IP/file input, and output as file or IP, various containers, various codecs; MPEG-2 TS (live), packaged formats (e.g. HLS, Smooth Streaming, HDS, DASH, RTMP), or mezzanine format for just-in-time packaging using RGB’s TransAct Packager.

Leading Density: Up to 4 HD (or SD) SDI inputs with embedded PCM audio per 1 RU AMS platform; high concurrency rates for IP or file inputs/outputs.

Leading Video Quality: Best-in-class video quality with next-generation H.264 compression engine, including extensive tools to tune performance by application.

Rich Audio Capabilities: Automatic loudness correction option, in addition to a wide array of stereo and surround codec support, including Dolby® Digital Plus with metadata, AAC-LC/-HEv1/-HEv2, MPEG Layer II.

Scalable: Can be clustered for multi-node management by TransAct Commander.

Ease of Integration: Open XML-based API for third-party network management systems (live) or content management systems (file output) integration.

Reliability & High Availability: Carrier-class reliability, including hot swappable power supply and fans, redundant Ethernet I/O, and clustering and chassis-level N:M redundancy with TransAct Commander.
