Video Remains Hot

Despite the struggling economy and the challenges faced by global markets, the video processing and delivery industry continues to thrive as operators focus on differentiating themselves from their competitors through migration to digital, support for more HD programming, and enhancment of advanced services, such as video on demand. Many operators are planning to increase their VOD services by up to fifty percent, as well as adding more high-definition on demand services. Additionally, there is a tremendous focus on advanced advertising techniques and methods for targeting and creating interactive ads to help generate new revenues and increase existing ad revenues.

With the rollout of these new technologies and services come many challenges. Operators must continuously look for cost-effective solutions that help them to meet and exceed the needs of their subscribers. Bandwidth constraints must be solved and new sources of revenue must be found, all at reduced costs and lower complexity.

As RGB Networks comes off a strong 2008 and crosses the $100 million mark in lifetime shipments, we look forward to continuing to meet the challenges of our customers with the industry’s most advanced video processing solutions. Read on to learn more about RGB’s solutions for bandwidth optimization in VOD and broadcast environments and revenue generation through advanced advertising.

We look forward to working with you in 2009.

RGB & SeaChange Offer Advanced
VOD Solution

Deliver 50% More VOD Content within Existing Bandwidth

Cable operators are in the midst of a major transformation of their video business from a static broadcast environment to a highly personalized, “unicast” environment. In conjunction with the move to a “what I want to watch, when I want to watch it” world is a trend towards increased focus on video quality. The proliferation of HDTVs in consumer homes has made even the most casual viewer aware of sub-par video quality.

The increasing number of HD streams, coupled with the ever-increasing number of personal streams will serve to dramatically increase the bandwidth requirement per user over the coming years. Operators need to change the way they think about the delivery of video streams and take advantage of the latest techniques in digital video processing to maximize the bandwidth of their current networks.

DTV Transition Delay Allows Operators Breathing Room on Closed Captioning Issue

With Congress pushing off the DTV transition date until June 12, US cable operators have a little extra time to make sure their networks are really ready. North American broadcasters are migrating to SCTE-21 Closed Caption services. An immediate issue that operators may not be aware of is that several legacy set-top boxes are not able to support SCTE-21 (contact us for more details). The migration of those set-tops could lead to the need for a very costly mass replacement of devices currently in service. Alternatively, a network-based video processing solution can be employed that supports SCTE-21 to SCTE-20 conversion. Fortunately, RGB Networks offers such a solution through our Broadcast Network Processor (BNP).
