Comparing Just-in-Time Packaging with CDN Storage for VoD and nDVR Applications
Consumer demand for multiscreen delivery is growing rapidly and video service providers (VSPs) are racing to provide comprehensive TV Everywhere services to satisfy their subscribers. One of the keys to delivering TV Everywhere is the “packaging” of each program into Apple HLS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, Adobe HDS and MPEG DASH. However, before packaging, VSPs must first create a number of “profiles” of each program, based on the devices to which they’re delivering. The requirement for multiple profiles of each program, combined with the need to save copies of every profile in various streaming protocols, requires a substantial amount of storage and forces VSPs to dramatically increase their storage capacity as they add new programs to their TV Everywhere libraries.
This paper explores an industry first — just-in-time packaging (JITP) — a technology that enables on-the-fly packaging, reducing the need for costly storage and network bandwidth.
