IPTV / Video-over-IP / OTT Delivery

As traditional telecommunications providers rapidly move into the business of delivering video services, they require a video processing partner that can provide the video expertise that can only come from years of hands-on experience.

RGB Networks not only understands video processing, but we also understand the technological, architectural and economical challenges that are faced by telco IPTV providers as they prepare their infrastructure for high-quality video delivery. Whether you're delivering services over managed IP networks or unmanaged over-the-top (OTT) networks, RGB's Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG™) has been designed from the ground up to specifically address the management, scale, quality and service flexibility needs of the new generation of IP video providers.

In a TV delivery network, RGB's VMG provides a platform for very high-density, scalable, unified video processing. It accommodates both broadcast and on-demand video from multiple sources and consisting of varying formats, resolutions and bit rates. The VMG processes the video content in real time, making it suitable for transport across various wireline and wireless networks with varying bandwidth constraints. It also allows for delivery to various types of end-user video display devices, making 'multiscreen delivery' a reality. The VMG does all of this while maintaining the highest video quality-of-experience (QoE).

Maximizing Revenue Potential with MPEG-4/H.264 and MPEG-2 Advanced Processing

At the heart of the VMG is an unparalleled, high-capacity MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/H.264 video processing engine. In combination with its IP multicast and unicast intelligence, the VMG provides a multitude of advanced video processing features in a single chassis, including video grooming for creating customized channel line ups, re-multiplexing of channels, transrating/rateshaping, transcoding, program switching and quality-of-service (QoS).

The VMG's high-density transrating functionality enable operators to deliver SD or HD content from various sources to a large number of subscribers in their network – which otherwise may not be serviceable due to bandwidth limitations, set-top box type, or video decoder-imposed constraint – thereby maximizing TV revenue potential at the lowest cost of ownership.

The VMG supports network evolution needs utilizing its flexible transcode and re-code support. It performs any operation between MPEG-4/H.264 and MPEG-2, at various screen resolutions, ranging from high definition 1920 x 1080 all the way down to picture-in-picture (PIP) and handheld device resolutions. Furthermore, VMG transcoding is best-in-class for its high quality and capacity, allowing for the repurposing of up to 144 high definition input streams into over 400 output streams, all within a single chassis. This capability allows complete channel lineup transcoding/re-coding, as well as multiple profile output support where one input is coded into different resolutions, bit rates or compression parameters to handle downstream network and consumer device needs.

MPEG-4/H.264 and MPEG-2 Ad Insertion

In order to off-set the cost of deploying new video delivery systems, IPTV and OTT network operators often require a new revenue stream. The VMG's ability to enable targeted advertising makes it an ideal solution in a highly competitive video marketplace. With the VMG's support for both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/H.264 ad insertion, IPTV and OTT operators, for the first time, have an integrated ad insertion solution together with best-of-breed advanced video processing functionality that can unlock the TV advertising revenue opportunity.

The VMG is fully compliant with SCTE 30 and SCTE 35 standards and is interoperable with leading ad servers. The VMG is ideally suited for both ad insertion systems centrally located at the VHO/headend facility for regional ad insertion, as well as for implementing zone-based or subscriber-based targeted advertising at the VSO level.

Leveraging the VMG's seamless splicing capability for multiple screen resolutions and various compression codec support, the VMG also performs digital program substitution, allowing a specific output to be seamlessly switched (spliced) between two different input programs under the control of a standards-based scheduling server.
